Born and raised in Cyprus, Ektoras Georgiou - Koushappas is a vocal pedagogue, actor, singer, and drama school instructor. He studied singing and musical theater at Berklee College of Music as a scholarship receipient, and he graduated with a Bachelor's degree with Magna cum Laude honors. During his studies, in addition to participating in musicals such as ''Nine" (Maury Yeston) and ''Jekyll and Hyde" (Frank Wildhorn), he took part in workshop productions and staged readings of original musicals. Other credits include performing with the Cyprus Opera Organization and on the short-length virtual musical 'Bubble' (dir. Lena Kasiou) that got presented by the Cyprus Theater Organization during the pandemic.
He completed graduate studies in classical singing at Boston University, once more on a scholarship, form where he graduated with a Master's degree and as a member of the Phi Kappa Lamda music honor society. He took part in the operas If I Were You, Cosí fan Tutte, El Caminante, and La Hija de Rappaccini. He trained further in acting and stage movement with the Boston University Opera Institute.
As a vocal pedagogue, he strives to help singers understand how traditional Italianate vocal instruction is supposed to feel in their individual body, acknowledging that traditional instruction is often phrased in confusing and misleading ways. He often works with singers struggling with severe tension, and has experience with singers recovering from Muscle Tension Dysphonia or dealing with the ageing voice. He works exclusively with classical and musical theater professional and pre-professional singers, as well as with actors on the training of the speaking voice for the stage and the voice as a character study tool. He teaches voice and a stagecraft masterclass in the 4-year professional program of the Broadway Academy in Vienna, in addition to his private studios in Antwerp, Vienna, and online.
He is trained in the International Phonetic Alphabet, and speaks Greek, English, French, and Dutch.
I often get asked by singers or actors how to balance vocal technique with acting, or how not to lose their technique while acting. I think that if we see it as a 'balancing act', the bet is already lost. It is not about balancing but about understanding the layers of bringing a character to the stage.
Many singers struggle with nasality in their tone. Many teachers try to address nasality by emphasizing space in the mouth or pharynx or even by approaching the note 'from behind'. These approaches are incomplete and simplistic at best. The answer to nasal singing is not space. The answer to nasality is good singing. Let's explore this.
